Title

Connecticuit - The Hartford Courant

Description

According to the newspaper’s website, The Hartford Courant is not only the oldest continuously published newspaper of the state, but rather it is older than the United States of America.  It began its publication as a weekly newspaper in 1764 by a printer named Thomas Green.  Then Green sold the newspaper to his assistant, Ebenezer Watson, who became very successful with the newspaper until his death in 1777.  Then Watson’s wife became the owner and, as a result, she became the first woman publisher in America.  According to the newspaper’s website, “During the Revolutionary War, The Courant had the largest circulation of any newspaper in the colonies and was an influential backer of the rebel cause.”

Based on the newspaper’s website, then in 1979, The Courant was bought by Times Mirror, which is a media and information company based in Los Angeles.  Based on the newspaper’s website, in 1992, the newspaper won a Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism based on their stories of the faults that afflicted the Hubble telescope.  Then in 1999, the newspaper was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting based on their intensive coverage of the traumatic events of the shooting at the Connecticut Lottery in 1998.

Based on the newspaper’s website, in 2000, Times Mirror was bought by Tribune Company, which is a Chicago-based media company.  Currently, The Hartford Courant has a daily circulation of more than 120,000 and a Sunday circulation of more than 180,000.
