Description

After a fire, several name and owner changes, the oldest newspaper in the state is the actual Vincennes Sun-Commercial. His first antecedent was the Indiana Gazette, founded in 1804 by Elihu Stout. In 1879, it acquired the name of Vincennes Sun, and started to publish in a daily basis. Two years before, though a competing weekly newspaper was founded: the Vincennes Commercial. According to the newspaper website, this paper was sold to to "The Commercial Company," with Thomas H. Adams as manager and editor. Adams was responsible to make the paper known, due to its strong criticism to the Ku Klux Klan. It made the newspaper turn into a political power during the 1920s. Then, in 1930, Eugene C. Pulliam purchased the Vincennes Sun and the Vincennes Commercial, which were fused into the Vincennes Sun-Commercial in 1931. According to the newspaper website, “In the late 1980s, the Sun-Commercial acquired Macintosh computers and became a pioneer in the nation in terms of producing a newspaper on a computer screen, a process known as "full pagination." Today the newspaper is owned by the Paxton Media Group of Paducah, Ky.
