According to the newspaper’s website, the lineage of The News Journal commences back to October 1, 1866, when Howard M. Jenkins and Wilmer Atkinson started publishing the first edition of the Daily Commercial. Then in 1877, a rival newspaper started its publication called the Every Evening, which was founded by William T. Croasdale. He would eventually take over the Daily Commercial. Charles W. Edwards and Frederick Eden Bach started the Evening Journal in 1888 in order to have a competition with the Every Evening. After some time, the two newspaper merged into one called the Journal-Every Evening in 1933. They continued to publish under that name until 1960 when it changed into the Evening Journal.
Based on the newspaper’s website, even though there was a competition between evening newspapers, the morning publication belonged to one newspaper only called the Morning Herald, which was founded by John O’Byrne in 1876. This particular newspaper eventually switched owners and started publishing under the Daily Morning News. From 1911 until 1920, Alfred I. du Pont owned the Morning News until he sold it to the Evening Journal and The News-Journal Co. was established. According to the newspaper’s website, The News-Journal Co. started publishing both The Morning News and the Evening Journal six days every week until 1975. From then on it started the Sunday News Journal and abolished the Saturday Evening Journal.
