Title

Nebraska - Fremont Tribune

Description

The Fremont Tribune of Fremont, Nebraska has been publishing to the eastern portion of the state since 1868, according to its website. Its first editor was J.N. Hayes, who also published the paper in his own name for two years until he regained the duty under the publishing title “J.N. Hays & Co” in 1871, Library of Congress records show. Originally formed as a weekly paper, Library of Congress records also show that the Tribune began printing May of 1883 under Hammond Bros. Publishing as a daily publication. Though experts from The Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America say that holdings of any copies of old Tribune issues are “virtually nonexistent, aside from Nebraska libraries,” they have a copy of an 1871 issue reporting on women’s suffrage and the constitutional convention for sale on their website for the cost of $2,500 as of May 9, 2015.

The current Tribune not only publishes news to its readers, but also shopping information in the form of a newsletter called the Fremont Area Shopper. The Shopper provides advertisement information for local businesses, coupons and short articles on lifestyle. In 2000, the Tribune was bought by Lee Enterprises, a news and advertisement provider based in Davenport, Iowa that owns 45 other daily newspapers and “nearly 300 specialty publications in 22 states,” according to its website. Just last year, publisher Vincent Laboy announced that the paper would no longer be published in print on Mondays since their online readership beat out the popularity of their print edition on that specific day of the week, as stated in a July 16 article. The same article cites that the Tribune began a shift to multimedia reporting a few years ago, thus providing breaking news on their website and social media pages like twitter and Facebook.
