Title

Alabama - Mobile Press-Register

Description

According to the Encyclopedia of Alabama , The Mobile Press-Register is Alabama’s oldest newspaper that has had many name changes throughout its past and is most of the time just called the Register. Many of their reporters, editors, and owners have been essential leaders in journalism, education, arts, and politics. The Mobile Press-Register began as the Mobile Gazette and the Mobile Commercial Register. According to the Encyclopedia of Alabama , James Lyon founded the Mobile Gazette and various other newspapers, however, he started printing the Gazette when the United States took control of Mobile from the Spanish in 1813. Jonathan Battelle and John W. Townshend began the Mobile Commercial Register in 1821. Then, they both purchased the Gazette in 1828. Throughout its history, the newspaper has changed owners countless times. According to the Pulitzer Prize website, Stanley R. Tiner of The Mobile Press-Register won a Pulitzer Prize in editorial writing in 1995. According to the Encyclopedia of Alabama, between 2007 and 2012, The Mobile Press-Register’s circulation dropped 18 percent, down to 82,000. The circulation also dropped for the Birmingham News and the Huntsville Times. In order to combat the decline, in May 2012, the decision was made to combine all three newspapers into its online partner al.com.
