Title

Maryland - Cecil Whig

Description

According to the Cecil Whig About page, the newspaper was found on August 7, 1841 by Palmer C. Ricketts to promote the Whig political party. It claims to be the “oldest newspaper on Maryland’s Eastern Shore still publishing under its original name”. A curious episode about Whig’s history is that “its founding editor shot and killed the editor of the rival Cecil Democrat in 1843”. Palmer C. Ricketts continued to publish the newspaper from his jail cell while he was waiting for the trial. Then, his crime was judged as a self defense act. The Whig used to be weekly, but today is a daily newspaper, publishing on business days. According to a Cecil Whig’s article from April 25, 2012, the paper “prints about 15,000 copies of its Friday edition, with smaller press runs for the Monday and Wednesday print editions”.
