Title

Oklahoma - The Edmond Sun

Description

The Edmond Sun was originally founded as a weekly publication on July 18, 1888 and remains as Oklahoma’s oldest operating news source to this day. According to the paper’s extensive about page by Andrew Coburn, the Sun served as the “hometown voice” of the town during many historically significant periods of American history such as the dust bowl and the Great Depression. The first issue of the Sun consisted of only four pages – but currently, it is now as a hybrid print and online publication that produces new content daily. Though as of 2015 it has operated for over 120 years, its staff still credits the publication’s rich history as part of its success. The paper’s founder, Milton Reynolds, is said to have set a precedent for more than a century of local news that still captivates the reading community. “Countless generations of residents have placed in scrapbooks cut-out articles about family life and impacting news events — all because Reynolds brought his manual printing press, typewriter and determination from Kansas to Edmond in 1889,” Coburn wrote. In Reynold’s editorial writing for the Sun, he urged citizens to support local education in the Oklahoma territory and even pressed for a bill “to locate what would become the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
