Title

Virginia - The Virginia Gazette

Description

Founded in 1736, The Virginia Gazette had faced many of the problems that many other colonial papers had during its time. With bulky and time-consuming printing methods, along with censorship and uncooperative weather situations, news distribution was slow until the revolution, where coverage of the growing unrest between the crown and the colonies was at its best. By 1775, there were three distinguished Virginia Gazettes in Williamsburg, all operating in the same town with the same name. However, after the relocation of the state capital from Williamsburg to Richmond, news publication had went into a “dormant period” from 1780-1929. It was not until 1893 that The Virginia Gazette experienced a revival by W.C. Johnson and lasted till 1918 when it was controlled by Record Publishing Corp. The Gazette continued to experience periods of discontinuation until the 1930 Williamsburg restoration, when it began to be published as a weekly paper once again. In current times, the newspaper is owned under Daily Press and has added an online distribution.
