California - Mountain Democrat

According to the newspaper’s website, the Mountain Democrat is located in Placerville, California and is the oldest continuously published newspaper in California since 1851 and was founded by Dan Gelwicks.  It includes news, sports, and features in El Dorado County.  According to the newspaper’s website, by their first issue of the newspaper, it became very popular and then the second one was enlarged and contained more ads and letters.  

According to the newspaper’s website, they created a style that was saved for decades: the first page would show ads miscellaneous feature stories.  However, over the next couple of years the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving, and other well-known authors would be on page 1.  Page 2 would hold columns of editorials promoting their views about the Democratic Party and other local news.  Page 3 had various ads, mainly from San Francisco and then page 4 would carry more advertisements and feature stories.  According to the newspaper’s website, the Mountain Democrat is in its 160th year of publication and is considered, “one of the 19 newspapers published in El Dorado County before 1858.”
