Title

Arkansas - Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Description

According to the newspaper’s website, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette started out as the Arkansas Gazette in 1819 when Arkansas was not yet a state and it was founded by William E. Woodruff.  Then, Woodruff founded the Arkansas Democrat and it started publishing a half a century later because of the tumultuous politics and the war-destroyed South.  According to the newspaper’s website, it had gone through several name changes, first The Liberal, then The Journal, then The Chronicle, and lastly The Evening Star.  In 1979, the Democrat became the first newspaper of its size to switch to an all-morning publication.  According to the newspaper’s website, in 1991 they combined together to make the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and it is considered, “the oldest continuously published newspaper west of the Mississippi.”

According to the newspaper’s website, in 1958, the Gazette was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes due to their commendable public service and another one to Harry Ashmore for his editorial writing.  As of 2006, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has a higher circulation than other newspapers in larger cities, like the Memphis Commercial-Appeal.
