Title

Rhode Island - The Providence Journal

Description

The Providence Journal origins firmly stem from its first predecessor, the Manufacturer’’s & Farmers’ Journal, Providence & Pawtucket Advertiser in 1829, when the twice-weekly paper became a daily. By 1863, the Providence Journal added the Evening Bulletin to create the Providence Journal-Bulletin. However, the addition of the Bulletin, which eventually became a late edition of the morning Journal, had been phased out entirely by 1995, thus returning the publication’s name to its familiar, current day title, the Providence Journal. The paper had won four Pulitzer Prizes over the course of its 180 year history, the first being won in 1945 and the second in 1953. The Providence Journal then won its third (1974) and fourth Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting in 1994. At 1994, the Journal had achieved a combined daily circulation of 188,217, with 74,400 Monday to Friday and 99,100 on Sundays

Due to rising prices of newspring and declining overall revenues, the Providence Journal had started to offer its publication online in 1995 in response to its changing environment. Eventually, the Providence Journal had turned over to public ownership through A.H Belo in the spring of 1996, helping the publication offset losses from declining advertising revenues and return it to focusing on “what it had done best”, providing quality and extensive statewide coverage through a slimmed down, single morning daily.
